MATERIAL FROM THE PRESENT,
FOR THE NEXT
2026.10.23 Fri — 11.22 Sun
Iron objects made a thousand years ago survive today, while the gestures of smelting, the division of labour and ways of understanding materials have undergone profound change. Metal endures; the lives organised around it are continually rewritten. A steel city’s transformation can be narrated as a chapter in industrial change, yet it also unfolds through factory processes, bodily habits, and the rhythms of work and leisure.
Under the title SUPER STAGE, the 2026 Kaohsiung International Steel & Iron Sculpture Festival brings two meanings of “stage” into conjunction. Grounded in Kaohsiung’s present, the stage is a site under construction, where visions of the city’s next move can be tested, rehearsed and brought into encounter. A stage also marks a phase of transformation: like the successive processes through which materials take form, Kaohsiung’s present will become a moment encountered in retrospect. Held together, these readings position STAGE as both an action directed towards the future and a recognition of where the city stands.
Beginning with steel, creators from Taiwan and abroad work across contemporary art, design, performance and sound to enter the intersections of manufacturing and everyday life. An indoor thematic exhibition, outdoor on-site creation, neighbourhood collaborations and an international forum connect international exchange, industry partnerships and educational outreach in a collective undertaking of inscription and documentation. Methods of making, experiences of use and proposals for the next phase leave their distinct accounts across these sites.
As the present becomes history, these works and self-authored accounts will carry the circumstances of their making, to be read alongside later narratives. Materials bear industrial experience; creative practices respond to working bodies and memories of everyday urban life. Generations and perspectives share the stage while retaining their differences. This site of contemporary art in a port city becomes an occasion to take stock and rehearse for the future.
To take the stage is also to leave an account. With the city as material, the festival records how the present has taken shape and what directions are still emerging—while events remain in motion and the next phase has yet to be determined.
