高雄市立歷史博物館成立於1998年，館舍前身為日治時期高雄市役所及戰後高雄市政府，是高雄重要的歷史現場。博物館以高雄城市歷史為核心，透過典藏、研究與展覽，持續梳理港灣、鐵道、產業、勞動與城市發展之間的關係。現行「大高雄歷史常設展」從水系與海港等脈絡呈現高雄的現代化歷程，其中「工業港都的承載」回望水資源、港灣建設與工業發展如何共同形塑城市；館方亦持續透過展覽與研究，梳理加工出口區、重工業、石化等產業及其背後的職人與勞動者，呈現高雄由臨港市街發展為臺灣重要工業城市的歷史軌跡。
The Kaohsiung Museum of History was established in 1998. Its building, formerly the Kaohsiung City Office during the Japanese colonial period and later the Kaohsiung City Government, is itself an important historical site in the city. Centered on the history of Kaohsiung, the museum explores the relationships among the harbor, railways, industry, labor, and urban development through its collections, research, and exhibitions. Its current permanent exhibition, The Permanent Exhibition of Greater Kaohsiung History, traces the city’s modernization through themes including waterways and the harbor, while examining how water infrastructure, port development, and industrialization shaped Kaohsiung. The museum’s exhibitions and research have also highlighted export-processing industries, heavy industry, petrochemicals, and the workers and skilled professionals behind them, documenting Kaohsiung’s transformation from a harbor settlement into one of Taiwan’s major industrial cities.
