Founded in Kaohsiung in 2021 and directed by artist and curator Huang Chih-Li, Orogeny Art Space is an independent art space dedicated to the presentation and promotion of contemporary art. With a particular focus on emerging artists in Taiwan, Orogeny provides a platform for artistic practice, curatorial experimentation, and exchange through exhibitions and projects that embrace experimental, interdisciplinary, and forward-looking approaches.
In 2025, Orogeny relocated from Sanmin District to Fuye Road in Yancheng District. While continuing to serve as a site for contemporary art practice and exhibition-making, the space has also begun to reconsider its relationship with the surrounding neighborhood: how art might become more accessible to local residents, and how artistic practice can foster meaningful and comfortable connections with the community.
Director Huang Chih-Li graduated from the Graduate Institute of Transdisciplinary Art at National Kaohsiung Normal University. His practice explores how urban conditions and changes over time shape human perception and experience, while drawing on geometric perspectives to consider relationships among people, objects, and space. In recent years, he has also incorporated curating into his artistic practice, using Orogeny Art Space as a platform to further explore the intersections of artistic creation, exhibition-making, space, and the city.

Endlessly Evolving

Ming-Yu Lin (TW)

“Endlessly Evolving” is the fourth chapter in an ongoing ceramic series begun by the artist in 2020, using clay as a medium to explore and imagine the geological lineage of Taiwan. The series began with “Becoming Earth” (2022), in which wood firing transformed dark clay into surfaces reminiscent of weathered rock and parched earth; “Glacial Moraine, Lava” (2023) used glaze to evoke Taiwan’s alpine glacial valleys and lakes alongside the fantastical forms of weathered volcanic rock; and “Wrinkled Imprints of Deep Time” (2024) expanded the temporal scale to contemplate Taiwan’s geological time and identity within a volcanic island chain.
In “Endlessly Evolving,” the artist shifts the viewpoint beyond Earth, imagining the planet from the perspective of a spacecraft escaping its gravity and breaking through the atmosphere. From this distance, Earth and other celestial bodies move along their respective orbits, rotating and revolving at different speeds. Their gravitational forces act upon one another, sustaining a seemingly motionless yet constantly changing relationship—a dynamic equilibrium in which energy accumulates and the possibilities of life emerge.

Returning from outer space to a scale measured by the human body, the artist turns to sedimentary rock, one of the most familiar forms of rock. Clays originating from different geological environments are joined together to create landscape-like strata resembling bands of woven color. Dense layers of varying tones, together with textures ranging from fine earth to coarse quartz sand, evoke the diverse and ever-changing forms of rock—the fundamental material of the planet we inhabit.
